Kathy Mattea sings John Martyn

This is from the Transatlantic Sessions concert at Royal Glasgow Concert Hall during Celtic Connections. It’s a fine and thought provoking song, and Kathy Mattea has a pretty stellar backing band too -- Jerry Douglas, Eddi Reader, John Doyle, Bill Cooley -- who else can you spot? and take a second listen to that chorus.

now playing: Eddi Reader: Aye Waulkin' O: video

This Robert Burns song has always struck me as holding both the promise and the sadness of springtime, without saying anything about any of that in the lyrics, and although it begins in summer. Paul Brady, Donald Shaw, Karen Matheson, and Aly Bain are among those backing up Eddi Reader in this clip from Transatlantic Sessions 3.
