creative practice:change

change.
creative practice is all change, people and situations change -- and then they don’t.

living through the changes is sometimes easier to say than to do. change involves waiting, and patience, as well as action, and acceptance.

watching a fire is a good way to think about -- or let go of -- all the aspects of change.

Terri Hendrix has a funny song on her new album, The Spiritual Kind, about how people change and forget to tell you about it. Also, on Hands Across the Water tthere are many songs which help with thinking about change. Two other good songs for this are Carrie Newcomer’s Hold On and Cathie Ryan’s Be Like the Sea, and if you want a bit of history woven in with all these ideas, Caroline Herring’s Trace.

creative practice: understanding

that one word could take whole shelves of books, of course. the context I’ve been thinking about lately is that often our best friends, those whom we trust the most, see us at our worst. that’s not only how they see. us, or all how they see us, of course. there’s both healing and room for reflection in that thought though. an idea to which to return, as well.

Speaking of faith

Faith is a subject which has come up along the Music Road before, and will again, I am sure.

Krista Tippett, host of the American Public Media radio show Speaking of Faith, has published several excerpts from her new book, also called Speaking of Faith, at the online community Gather. Here's part of chapter two, about her Baptist preacher grandfather (and also not about him).

I write a music column at Gather, also, published every other Thursday and called Voices. There you may find articles about Donal Clancy, Vince Gill, Mary Younglood, Hanneke Cassel, Cathie Ryan, and others.

Music and baking bread

I bake my own bread and --- these days anyway -- do not follow any recipes. There are a couple of familiar standbys I often make and then there are the variations and experiments. First loaf I ever made was hard as a rock, but, that was years ago and I’ve learned from the results, from trying others’ breads, and just from the making of it.

What does all that have to do with music? You decide.
